Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was born in Helsinki at a time when Finland, like most of northern Europe, was not yet electrified. During Tynell's lifetime, electric lighting became widespread and the designer became one of the pioneers of modern lighting. Tynell was later warmly remembered as the man who lit up Finland.

Tynell's lighting designs emphasised atmosphere rather than efficiency, and the artist's pen often added a touch of delicacy to the simplistic funkiness.
